August Inspirations

I’ve been inspired by a lot of things in my life lately. I wanted to share some things that I enjoy, in hopes that it will spark an interest for you as well.

Inspiration Sherri Johnson

1. Photographer: Jose Villa.  Amazing film photographer.

2. Music: Florence and the Machine album Lung.

3. Decoration: New furniture set from Urban Home and Anthropologie rug in a floral pattern has transformed my living room to a very creative and serene place.  I can’t wait to have clients/friends over to enjoy it.  =)

4. Canon 100mm 2.8L Macro lens: A magnificent piece of equipment.  I’ve decided to rent it for the weekend to try out some detail shots.

5. Succulents in all shapes, colors, and sizes.

6. All things yellow and gray

I’m likin’ your style and especially the rug! I have succulents here at home. Want some cuttings? I can take you some and when you get home just stick them in a pot of soil and they’ll re-root.

Thanks Magalie! I didn’t know it was that easy to grow more succulents… kinda like starfish huh? I actually just bought a big variety pot at Home Depot the other day so I have enough to tide me over. =)

Personal: Summer in North Carolina

Mat and I just got back from vising the beautiful mountains of North Carolina, where we spent a lot of time enjoying the great outdoors.  Mat’s father lives in Marble with his wife Cathy, and they have 1 dog: Murphy, 2 cats: Barney and Fife, and 3 llamas: Chief, Duke, and Smackers.  A couple interesting facts about llamas, they have no upper teeth and their top lip is split in 2 to help grab grass and hay into their mouths.  Summers are hot in North Carolina, and these guys are native to cool South American highlands.North Carolina llamas

To keep cool, their coat is trimmed short and they have 2 fans in their barn.  (Pictured on the right below.)  I think it’s cute how their heads barely pop over the fence.  The llamas are about 5′ tall and weigh about 350 lbs.  They also have 2 toes that need regular trimming.  (Trimming “station” pictured on the left side of the picture below.)

These kiddos’ uncle helped build the barn for the llamas, so they came to visit.  I couldn’t help myself to take a couple of pictures of them too.

One of the days we were visiting, we all went down to the Nantahala River to do some white water rafting.  It was my first time going, but I felt pretty safe with the pros.  The most important part of rafting is to plan your route and avoid large protruding rocks.  We did all right, no one fell out believe it or not!  At the end of the river, we took this photo below and ate at the restaurant pictured to the left.  They had the most amazing Vidalia Onion rings, we went back a couple days later for more.

Proof of our adventure over the falls.  (We bought the goofy looking picture to frame, but I had to share them all.)

I can’t believe I got this shot of a Ruby Throated Hummingbird!  He was fast and about 2″ small.

Sherri…these are beautiful! And what a gorgeous place, now I’d like to visit! The llamas are so near and dear to my heart; I love to knit with Alpaca yarn, so soft!

Thanks Magalie! That’s so cool you knit! What do you make?

Austin + Alycia: Married

Last night, I had the wonderful pleasure of photographing Austin + Alycia’s wedding in Yorba Linda.  The wedding and ceremony took place at Black Gold Golf Club, a beautiful venue for beautiful pictures.  The site features a waterfall, grassy mountains, the greens, and special sunset spot up on by the 11th hole.  Alycia’s style popped everywhere from the bright pink color, hot pink flowers, and “princess” tiara.  Here’s their day.

The ladies got ready in the conference room… and had some bubbly with strawberries.

Pink, pink, and more pink.  The bridesmaids wore simple black dresses with a hot pink sash tied around the waist, hot pink roses, and a sparkly pink ring for bling.

Alycia’s father walks her down the isle.  Above the altar was a green chandler with pink ribbons streaming down.  Love it!

The cake and centerpieces, with stargazer lilies and roses.  The circular vases also had more roses in them with pink and black ribbon.

After the ceremony, we snuck away for some great shots of our newlyweds.  We had to include the waterfall for one.

I love the following shots…  these were taken at the 11th hole on top of a hill.  The sun was setting and gave beautiful lighting.

And of course, the shoe shot.  =)  No SJP wedding is complete without this one.

Here’s a little sneak peak behind the scenes on the above image.  Photo taken by my assistant Holly Steen.  Below, Austin and Alycia got to ride in the golfcart… and hang out on the green.

When we got back to the reception, Alycia changed out of her dress to one more comfortable and light.  It was white with black ribbons on the back.  These two had so much energy and kept dancing all night long!

Los Angeles Photog Shootout: July

Every once in a while, I like to attend photography shootouts to build my skills, try out new techniques, and network with fellow photographers.  I just added a new lens and camera body to my collection last week, and I can’t wait to start using them more to get some amazing shots!   Today, I spent the afternoon with my Los Angeles Photog Shootout group in Long Beach shooting a mock wedding.  Here’s the day.

Location: The Ebell Club of Long Beach

Adam+ Amanda: Married

Adam and Amanda tied the knot this past Saturday in Santa Monica, California.  The ceremony was beach themed and included sprinkles of personal touches everywhere.
Location: Annenberg Guest house
Cake: Vanilla Bake Shop
Photography: Sherri Johnson, 2nd photographer Sabina Hill
Flower Design: Sherri Calosso of Serving your Soul

The Annenberg Guest House was recently renovated last summer and is a historic landmark.  When I scouted the location a couple days before the wedding, I fell in love with the bathrooms! Now typically, this would not be the most ideal spot for wedding pictures… but I’m all about non-traditional and fun images.  =)   Amanda’s bridal bouquet included bright pink and maroon flowers, including Cellosia that looks just like coral!  Her strapless dress has beautiful heart shaped beading and a long train.

Some bling for the bride, a vintage styled necklace from Jcrew and beach themed necklace for the lovely ladies.  Each bridesmaid was given one that was unique.

These next bridal shots of Amanda are absolutely stunning!  Perfect expression, lighting, pose.  Love it.

The bridal suite overlooked the Pacific ocean, and down off the balcony guests were being seated for the ceremony.  Adam, you are one handsome man.

Adam wore patent leather converse shoes with his tailed suit jacket, and the guys rocked the classic black converse high tops.

The sun began to set, and it was time for the ceremony.  The photo below is quite possibly one of my top picks for the whole day.  It’s deeply packed with so much emotion and love.  Friends and family in the bridal party placed a hand on the new couple and were asked to pray.  I’m so grateful Sabrina and I were in perfect position to capture both of these perspectives at the same time.

Over the wedding planning process, Amanda has not only been a client, but we have grown as friends.  I can admit and I wanted every image to be perfect… it was a little hard to see though my camera when I cried during the ceremony, but I managed and got more emotion filled shots.  Happy tears for everyone!

Los Angles Wedding Photography

Adam and Amanda chose to wait and see each other until the ceremony.  Typically, this is not something I recommend, but since the ceremony and reception were in the same place, we had a moment to sneak away for these awesome shots.

The Annenberg Guest House is the background of this shot, with beautiful palm trees and a sunset.  It doesn’t get much more California than this!

Last but not least, the bathroom obsession revealed.  I had an idea my head all night long, that Adam and Amanda would trust in me to put them into the vintage tub.  Dress, tux and all.  They were game, and this last shot is awesome.  I love love love it.  I love love my beautiful couple.  And I love love.  Congratulations again to Adam and Amanda.  I wish them many years of happiness and photos that will help you relive this day forever.
